  • Determine whether a licensed driver can continue driving based on their medical condition or recommend if they should stop driving and start planning for alternative transportation. Alternative transportation planning is provided.

Behind the Wheel

  • Assess driving maneuvers and behaviors in a motor vehicle on a variety of different public roadways.
  •  Assess vehicle seating, entry and exit skills
  • Determine the best way to drive and carry/stow a mobility device such as a wheelchair, walker, or scooter, if needed.
  • Assess and use vehicle safety feature technology and driver aids effectively.
  • SMARTdriver analysis and education for vehicle selection, and use of advanced driver assisted systems (ADAS) for safety.

EMBRACE Mobility Services New drivers

New Driver Evaluation Readiness to Drive

Driver rehabilitation services offer thorough, developmentally suitable assessments for adolescents and young adults with developmental or acquired disabilities. These specialized services help create a tailored plan to achieve community mobility which may include driving goals which enables them to access their community for educational, social, and vocational purposes. New Drivers are not required to have a permit or license.

Participating in these services can help to determine appropriate timing for beginning traditional driver education, will tailor sessions to individual learning styles, and when necessary, will collaborate with conventional driving schools to ensure a smooth transition. The occupational therapist will create a plan, provide the necessary resources and recommendations, and connect the young adult and parents with community resources. Executive function coaching is available to support mastering pre driving skills.

Executive Functioning Coaching for Mobility Transitions

Mobility Coaching helps clients acquire independent skills for home and community use. Provided after assessments, it assists with the mobility plan and aims for clients to demonstrate independence, accountability, and effective pedestrian skills, which are essential for driving. This one-on-one service is available both in person and virtually, and adolescents can receive coaching regardless of formal driver's education requirements.

1:1 Training

1:1 Training

All clinic and car training is conducted one-on-one. An occupational therapy certified driving rehabilitation specialist may be ideal for exploring how to drive, addressing challenges, or progressing at your own pace. Traditional driver training might not meet specific sensory or learning needs, causing anxiety. Specialists can address particular skills or the need for adaptive equipment. EMBRACE Mobility can determine the right adaptive equipment, best vehicle setup, and train new drivers based on their medical needs. As a driving school we can support meeting the behind the wheel requirements for new drivers.
